I have a problem with rub-ons. Do you?

The two older nephews really like to play with this yam plant along the pathway en route to the playground....pretending it's a big umbrella or a monster plant.... *LOL*

I'm happy I got to use some of my rub-on stash. It could be the heat and humidity here but rub-ons don't last very long here....either they get rubbed on to the backing paper or they don't rubbed off at all like the squiggly brown scribble at the base of the layout....I just fussy-cut and adhered with matt accents. Do you have the same problem with rub-ons or is it just me? [Yep, I no longer buy rub-ons, just furiously use them when someone sends some to me! *LOL*]

How to create a mixed media canvas.

Hello there friends! Today I sharing how I created this mixed media canvas, my design team project for LESSology Challenge #17: Fun with envelopes.

It can be a pretty daunting task if you are creating a mixed media canvas for the first time, so start small. I started with a 6 x 6 gesso primed canvas board and a negative chipboard panel [these are great for masking backgrounds too].

I adhered the negative chipboard panel, trimmed away the excess edges, then added texture paste. You can add as much or as little as you want. I like having grooves and uneven bumps.

Paint a layer of base paint. You can choose any colour you want. But I wanted to use masking tape for additional texture at the edges so I chose this beige colour. 

I added masking tape at the edges and alternated painting with fuchsia and white paint, letting part of the base paint and masking tape peek through. You can use a paint brush or just use your fingers  to vary the intensity of colour.

For the base of the focal point, I added some old envelopes, then lightly painted over them. After that I added a layer of crackle paint and rubbed some distress inks over the envelopes.

Then I embellished with some pretties....

Made a handmade bloom with some lace, felt and pearls.

And finished off with some white rub-ons. 

There you have it. A little mixed media canvas. Not that difficult right? What do you think?

Love between siblings...and a challenge winner!

Lately, I've been spending a lot of time with littlest nephew J and niece S. Love watching the interaction between these two. :)

So I was very happy that I got this beautiful shot of them...

Decorated wooden pegs

 

So I found these fun wooden pegs as I was reorganizing and thought I should jazz them up a little....with my "keep-it-for-a-rainy-day" stash of course...*winks*  

I love that I could use up little bits of trim....

And I just love this black leather bloom [from an old pair of Nine West shoes].

Supplies: Graphic 45 patterned papers, Ranger distress ink and stickles, trim, various embellishments.

10 more ways to incorporate found ephemera on your projects.

You know how I just love to incorporate found ephemera on my creations. :) Back in May, I shared 3 ways of incorporating found ephemera on your projects. Here are 10 more ways to incorporate found ephemera on your projects! :)

The decorated black box.

1. Trim it down to fit.

I go by Tim Gunn's famous tagline, "Make it work! " when it comes to ensuring something I want to use gets used! If something's sticking out, cut it down to a manageable size so that it would fit. Yep, the other part of the orange cable tie will appear on a future project. *LOL*

Beyond hilarious layout.

2. Stamp on it...and add stickers.

This works well on flat objects like an ice-cream stick, fabric or tag. 

A mixed media canvas.

3. Make it whimsical.

Pair unexpected elements for a whimsical appeal. My inspiration for the canvas came from the book page. Let your imagination run a little wild. :)

Be mine darling card.

4. Try a different base.

Use a base you've never tried before and you just might surprise yourself. My card was "built" on a Maya Road kraft envelope.

Thanks card.

5. Mix textures.

Try mixing items of different textures together. The contrast can be very visually appealing. Think biker jacket meets chiffon dress...feminine yet edgy. 

The gangster gang: fire hydrant edition layout.

6. Make it (them) into something else.

In this layout, I used 2 ice-cream stickers to make a wooden signage. I also layered a few elements to create the sun and I took the wooden cat off a keychain.

A glittered mini hanger.

7. Try (a little or a lot of) glitter.

Glitter is a great way to make everyday objects like a hanger look instantly more stylish! :)

Trick or treat card.

8. Add dimension to an existing pattern.

Old toy wheels on a bicycle image? Fun!

A distressed tag.

9. Create a "scene".

Yep. I really wanted to use this old watch casing. So I created a whole "scene" to fit it in. Complete with flying pig. :)

Woodgrain paper bag.

10. Make it 3D.

Make it attention-grabbing. Make the person looking at it want to reach out to touch it. [The bird was yanked from its perch when the nephews saw the bag! *LOL*]
