Combining two of my current fave things....

Colourful-mixed-media-girl-on-canvas

No prizes for guessing what my current fave things are...*winks*...mixed media and drawing. :)

I really wanted to just do an abstract mixed media piece using stencils and colorants.

Then I got stuck. My piece really needed a focal point. Before I knew it, I was drawing and painting a girl's face on my canvas panel. *winks*

It was actually quite hard to "play" on a textured surface that was loaded with layers of stencilled paint. But I actually love the texture on her face. :)

What do you think?

A mixed media girl on canvas for the Mixed Media Monthly Challenge

Mixed-media-girl-for-MMMC-by-Yvonne-Yam

Hello friends! The fabulous team at The Mixed Media Monthly Challenge are celebrating their first year anniversary and invited me to join in the fun! :)

My mixed media girl on 12x12 canvas was painted with acrylic paints and the details were done with Prismacolor pencils.

You can create a project for any of the past year's challenges...I did #12.:)

Catching dreams in 2015

Dream-catcher-mixed-media-canvas

Hello friends! :) Hope 2015 has been good for you so far. Thought I would start the year with a symbolic project featuring a dream catcher...so that we can all catch our dreams...*high fives all around*

The base of the canvas was coloured with Shimmerz Inklingz. I've had them for months but never really used them. [Ahem...hoarder! *winks*]  The dream catcher was something I made when I was a teenager. Yeah, someone gave it to me as a present. It came with instructions of course. But I was a non-conformist even back then...*LOL*

Pastel colours and floral clusters...

Sweet-12-x12-mixed-media-canvas-by-Yvonne-Yam

Hmmm...I think I am actually getting the hang of pastel colours and the floral clusters. :)

Oh yes, that would be an 8x8 canvas panel on a 12x12 canvas. As always, overzealous colouring and stamping on the background patterned paper requires serious coverup. *winks*

And then of course, I really got into the whole layering of embellishments.

You know how it is....the brain says "Stop wasting embellishments!", the heart says "Just one more here...and here...and here..." and before you know it, there's glue on the embellishment and you just have to glue it down. *LOL*

Lots of fun textures...lace, satin, metal, wood, plastic...

I love the shimmer from the Wink of Stella brush pen....

I also added more sparkle with glass bead gel and glitter paint.

I went in with some Crackle accents on the Prima wooden ATC.

It was a lot of work but I had fun...and now a valid reason to buy more embellishments...you know, as replenishments of course. *winks*

Playing along with the Mixed Media Monthly Challenge...I went with Stencil, Glitter and Patterned paper.

*Edited* This layout earned an Honorable Mention at The Mixed Media Monthly Challenge.

Incredible adventure mixed media canvas

Incredible-adventure-mixed-media-canvas

Art is an incredible adventure...you never know what you can do unless you give it a try.

For me, it relates to stamping. I can never stamp nice crisp images...and believe me, I've bought every tool and tried every trick in the book...I always have to touch up with a marker...*LOL*

The foray into mixed media gave my stamps a new lease of life because imperfect stamping became a deliberate attempt at giving random texture...*winks*

Of course, my first attempt at stamping this lovely lady directly on the canvas was an epic fail. So I tried on a piece of wrapping tissue..[almost perfect, I can live with that!] and then adhered it to the canvas with gel medium. After that, it was colouring and embellishing time! :)

A mixed media canvas for The Mixed Media Monthly Challenge

Dream-believe-love-mixed-media-canvas

So I was invited to be the guest designer at The Mixed Media Monthly Challenge blog this month. The challenge this month is to use ribbons, twines or fibers.

I started by pulling out base supplies I wanted to use for my mixed media canvas - The Crafter's Workshop stencils, Liquitex white opaque flakes medium, Silks acrylic glazes and this text paper from 7 Dots Studio. I find that limiting my colour combo on the onset of a project helps me focus a little more...[you know how bad my Shiny Object Syndrome is...*LOL*]

I usually pull out lots of things I want to incorporate on my canvas...sometimes forgetting that it's just a 6x6 canvas. *winks*

But I usually end up with very little on my project because I love white space. :)

Hope you find time to play along with The Mixed Media Monthly Challenge. The sponsor this month is May Arts Ribbon. The winner get 3 spools of fall inspired ribbons!

Thursday

I went a little mixed media crazy on the lid of this box....

Upcycled-mixed-media-black-box

So my sister has been handing me these black gift boxes [sadly, no gifts in them...:(]. Now, you know I LOVE a good sturdy box because it can take my "abuse" better right? *winks*

I gave the lid of the box a clear coat of gesso because I wanted to see how the Silks acrylic glazes look wqrk on a darker background. Then I added a remnant piece of vintage lace and a white floral trim to the base of the box lid. For the top portion, I used the The Crafter's Workshop stencil with Liquitex sand resin and coloured with Silks acrylic glazes.

The beauty of using a glaze is that you can see the layer underneath it...I actually only used two metallic glaze colours - teal and blue. To add sparkle, I added Jo Sonja's clear glitter paint.

Then embellish! :)
