When the elements appear to be unrelated...

Be-brave-mixed-media-canvas

"Creativity comes from a conflict of ideas." Donatella Versace
And that apparently, is supposed to explain the cluster of seemingly unrelated elements on my mixed media canvas....*winks*

I would like to tell you that there's a deeper meaning to the elements here but really, I just pulled together all the browns and beiges in my "save-it-for-a-rainy-day" stash...*LOL*[ yes, the teddy bear fabric button looks totally out of place, right?].

I started by covering an old canvas with DCWV burlap, then used distress paint and my fave The Crafter's Workshop stencil for the background.

Then I picked out elements in neutral tones for an overall organic feel.

My last project for SRM Stickers

Littlest nephew J loves to draw and colour. It's the only time he can sit still for 30 minutes or so...*winks*

This is my last project for SRM Stickers as part of the current design team. I kept it really simple...the background was created with mists and The Crafter's Workshop stencil. I used a SRM doiley as a mat for my photo.

I cut apart a polka-dot sticker strip for the little dots and added some enamel dots for texture. The title work is an SRM Sticker too. :)

Happy weekend friends! :)

Why my sister and I have pink wallets...

So back in March, my brother went on a business trip to the US and came back bearing gifts for my sister and me. Now, he's not a gift-giving person so the fact that we got anything was already a bonus...*LOL*

My sister opened her Coach box first and shrieked, "Pink wallet?" [she is so not a girly girl...haha!]  to which my brother replied, "You can exchange with Yvonne if you prefer hers..."

When my sister saw that my wallet was an even louder shade of pink, we both broke out laughing hysterically. Our brother really does not know us at all. [I like classic and timeless pieces when it comes to fashion. :)]

The one about the pretend sad faces....

The-pretend-sad-faces

Got to say my parents can be really cute...especially when they are always game to pose for fun photos...*winks*

Here they are with their "pretend" sad faces... but why the sad faces you ask?

Hehe..they didn't like the main course they ordered....

The embellished white wood monogram

Y-white-decorated-monogram

I've had this 'Y' white wood monogram from Typo for ages. When I first got it, I had grandeur plans to embellish it but actually did nothing but hung it up on the wall [*hangs head in shame*]...and did I mention that I have a black unembellished one as well? *LOL*

I used a large piece of lace and adhered to the wood monogram with gel medium. I found a clear strap in my "save-it-for-a-rainy-day" stash and thought it might be cool to "belt" my monogram. *winks* Then I finished with some pearls along the edges and paper blooms and leaves. :)

Now, the black unembellished wood monogram is beckoning to me..."When will you make me pretty?"

Lunch at Level 33

Level-33

So we had an early birthday celebration for my father last week at Level 33, a restaurant located at the Marina Bay Financial Centre...with spectacular views of the Singapore city skyline.

I was happy to use up some '3's in my stash...:)

I pulled the colours from my father's shirt for the background and used black as a grounding colour to tie all the elements together.

Marini's on 57

Marinison57

I finally got to check out Marini's on 57, Kuala Lumpur's highest rooftop bar and restaurant. It was lovely to sip cocktails at sunset hour and admiring the city's best views through the floor to ceiling glass windows.  :)

Now, I'm totally behind on scrapbooking on my travel pics, which you know, are mostly about food *winks* but I really wanted to use The Crafter's Workshop Skyline stencil ...*LOL*

I started by using Liquitex blended fibers with the stencil on my non-stick craft mat [when it dries, you peel off the whole thing..pretty cool!]. Then I painted it gold.

After that, I used the other part of the stencil with Art Anthology stone effects paint. Then glued the whole piece to my patterned paper base.

Currently loving....the kraft pillow boxes from SRM

Decorated-kraft-pillow-boxes-for-SRM-Stickers

So I was more than a tad excited when I got the new additions to the SRM store - the kraft pillow boxes! These are quick and easy to dress up! :)

I stamped the medium kraft pillow box with a Paper Smooches stamp set, then added a SRM "thank you" sticker to a scallop diecut.

For the small kraft pillow box, I made some folds with the scallop die cuts for a fun embellishment and added a sticker strip at the base.

Everything I used except for the stamps and ink, are available at the SRM Store.

The elevator family selfie mixed media canvas

Family-mixed-media-canvas

So the old folks are pretty sporting when it comes to posing for selfies...*winks* Here's one we took when we had the whole elevator to ourselves...with 33 levels to go...

Yes...yes...still exploring my dark side on my canvases..[sinister music plays in the background]. Love that I could finally use the plastic tiles that spell "family"..they were in my "save-it-for-a-rainy-day" stash for a really really long time..

If you guessed that the piece of black lace serves some cover-up purpose, you would be right!  It was one of those canvas backgrounds I messed up and it had this blob of paint colours right in the centre [overzealous use of paint + water]. I used a flourish foam stamp to soak up the paint while it was still wet and stamped on the rest of the canvas.

Then I got my glue gun out for some serious embellishing...*winks*

Using the glass pieces from old lighting...

Animal-kingdom-project-by-Yvonne-Yam-for-LESSology2

So I mentioned in my post yesterday [Getting to know my creative process] that I was trying to salvage parts from an old lighting fixture. I had to use the glass bits since I love anything clear and see-through [except clothes..for modesty reasons...*LOL*]

I glued the two separate glass pieces with E6000 glue, an industrial glue  [the old glue gun isn't gonna work..*winks*], then added some lace, pearls, leave, blooms and a tiny clay frog for LESSology Challenge #37: Animal Kingdom. Now it can be a pen holder. candle holder or a vase. A really quick and easy project for the home. :)

Getting to know my creative process..

Mixed-media-canvas-with-old-lighting-parts
So my bloggy pal, the fabulous and oh-so-talented Julie Tucker-Wolek invited me to be part of a virtual blog hop to share my answers to the following questions:

1. What are you working on?
2. How does your work differ from others of its genre?
3. Why do you write/create what you do?
4. How does your writing/creating process work?

My creative process starts with an object. I have always been a collector of things. Pretty things, cute things, unique things... they all went into my "save-it-for-a-rainy-day" stash. *winks* Just this weekend, I dismantled some old lighting...and incorporated them in my latest mixed media canvas.

Even though I like to work with trendy things, these days I find myself drawn to seeing "potential" in found objects. And they've worked their way onto my canvases...and to my home walls as art.

Like most, I struggled to find my artistic "style". I tried to "copy" popular styles with hopes of eventually finding one that would be "me". Good thing I realized that freestyle is a style too....not being pigeon-holed into a specific category opens up so many possibilities.

I love that I'm evolving as an artist...and constantly surprising myself on this journey. You can only have growth if you take chances. So experiment away! :)

P/s:  Next week, check out my teamie Mitra Pratt's post on her creative process. That girl sees potential in everything and her projects are one-of-a-kind collectibles. :) A big "thank you" to my bloggy pal Julie Tucker-Wolek for inviting me on this virtual blog hop....please check out her post and incredible projects.
