An obsession with a certain shade of blue....*winks*

An-obsession-with-a-certain-shade-of-blue....

Ever since I painted my chair with Martha Stewart's chalkboard blue paint last year, I've had big plans to makeover other pieces of furniture with the same colour. The two storage pieces I have in my bathroom were the perfect "victims" of my obsession...*evil music plays in the background*

First up was this old and tired wood storage unit which was practically screaming for a makeover. *winks*
Next up was this wooden organizer. I do love how much brighter my bathroom is after painting these two pieces in blue. :)

When the boys play mahjong....

When-the-boys-play-mahjong...

So I'm going to let you in on a little secret....the adult Yams are mahjong addicts and the Yam boys [aka nephews] have picked it up too! *dramatic music plays in the background*

Actually, the Yam boys just like to use the mahjong pieces as building blocks. *winks*

The "rescue" mission

The-rescue-mission

Last Friday, my dad went out for a consulting session without his lower "pearly whites"[aka dentures] so my mum and sister set off on a "rescue" mission after repeated calls on his mobile yielded no response.

Yep....it could totally be a script for a cheesy tv show.*LOL*

Turns out my dad had swollen gums so he didn't want to wear his dentures anyway. And his phone didn't ring because it was low on battery. Nothing like a drama out of nothing.... but I did get some great photos! *winks*

Mixed media girl on a wood panel

Mixed-media-girl-on-a-wood-panel
I have been having fun drawing and painting my mixed media girls on different substrates. This one's on a 12x16 wood panel frame. :)

The substrate was prepped with a few layers of white gesso. Then I sketched my girl with a Prismacolor coloured pencil.

Next I went in with paint, inks, pastels and pencils.

I finished off with white highlights using a white pencil and white paint pen.

What do you think?

Little Miss Dress Up

Little-miss-dress-up

Meet Little Miss Dress Up....my niece S! While her brothers are rough housing on my bed, she's always checking out my accessories rack and telling me how everything is just "so pretty"! *winks*

And her face absolutely lights up when I ask her if she wants to try them on. She's a girly girl like her Aunt. :)

P/s: Furiously trying to use up the patterned paper scraps before the end of the year...can you tell? *LOL*

Bits and bobs on my monogram

Bits-and-bobs-on-my-monogram

I'm always happy to use the bits and bobs in my "save-it-for-a-rainy-day" stash. Like on this monogram.

I was going for a monochromatic red but didn't have any tonal variations in my stash to create a visual impact so I decided to add another colour.  With Christmas in the air, green seemed like an obvious choice. *winks*

If you scrutinize the monogram, you would notice that the lace was "pieced" together.....don't throw away those little bits of lace! The green "bling" was from an old choker necklace.

Using packaging materials on my mixed media canvas

Using-packaging-on-a-mixed-media-canvas

You know that I love to reuse packaging on my artwork. Can you spot the packaging materials I used on my mixed media canvas? *winks*

There's the wrapping tissue base for the canvas. The distressed patterned paper base was the backing for a pack of Prima tags (as seen on this canvas).

And the translucent ribbon came with a box of tea. :)

I finished with Maya Road spools, pearls and buttons.

My first Christmas wreath

Christmas-wreath-by-Yvonne-Yam-for-Maya-Road

So I decided that this was the year I would actually try decorating a wreath for Christmas.

I did a Google image search for Christmas wreaths and boy were the majority time-consuming! Who has time to cover up the entire wreath with yarn first and then decorate it, right? *winks* [My wreath is pretty small actually...hahaha]

Oh well, I decided that I kind of like the organic feel of the straw wreath so I added some pops of colour with Maya Road vintage lace tape. A couple more Maya Road embellishments - Bottle Brush Tree, deer resin, bottlecap star and vintage bead and I was done in 30 minutes. :)
